Ingredients

Bread Pudding Base

  • 1 long loaf of French Bread (torn into bite-sized pieces)
  • ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter (melted)
  • 1 cup raisins (optional, but adds a sweet chewiness)
  • 4 cups milk (whole milk works best for a rich texture)
  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup dark rum or whisky (optional, for added depth; substitute with ½ cup extra milk if desired)

Sweet Glaze Topping

  • ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter (melted and cooled)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 2-quart casserole dish (or 8×8-inch baking dish) with nonstick cooking spray.

Toast the Bread

  • Cut or tear 1 long loaf of French bread into bite-sized pieces. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter. Add the bread and toast until golden brown and crispy.Once toasted, transfer the bread to the prepared casserole dish and sprinkle 1 cup raisins on top.

Assemble the Pudding

  • Pour the custard mixture over the bread and raisins. Gently press the bread down so it soaks up the liquid. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.

Bake the Bread Pudding

  • Place the casserole dish in the oven and bake for 1 hour. Check at the 40-minute mark. The pudding is done when the top is golden brown and the custard has set. Insert a toothpick to check for doneness.

Pour the Glaze Over the Pudding

  • Once the bread pudding is slightly cooled, drizzle the warm glaze over the top.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve the bread pudding warm or room temperature. Pair with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or caramel sauce for extra indulgence!
